When I'm corresponding with parents in the days leading up to their newborn sessions, I often hear the same concerns about how well the baby will settle during the session:
Well, that all sounds very, very typical.
And I'm really, really good at managing a baby who wants to run the show... As far as I'm concerned, the baby always runs the show!
That said, there are many tricks that I use to make sure that the newborns in my sessions are as comfortable as possible. Here are a few:
A warm room:
My recommendation is that your home is warmed to about 25C so that it's comfortable for a naked baby, and ideal for getting them to fall asleep (and stay asleep) while they're wearing very little.
There is a reason why some of the tricks to calm down a baby include running the washing machine/vacuuming/going for a drive... At newborn sessions, I'll often break out my white noise app to help keep baby happy and sleepy!
Babies eat a lot. Really. A lot. A hungry baby? Is not a happy baby. So we break whenever baby is hungry. (This is why session lengths can vary so much - when we're running on the schedule of a unique newborn, it's hard to say how long they'll want to pose for before a snack.)
For a really fussy baby, a nice swaddle can sometime be great to calm them down/get them sleepy.
Or not. (There is really no rulebook, so we do what baby likes!)
At the end of the day, your child is an individual - and I treat them as such. One of the reasons that my photos aren't carbon-copies of each other from session to session is because I take the preferences of each newborn and each family into consideration when I'm taking photos. I want everyone to be comfortable during each of my sessions - which means that although I work with you to plan your session, I take advantage of everything that is special about your child and family when I am building your gallery.
