Headshot Session - What to expect
What to wear:
At the end of the day, wear what you feel the most comfortable and/or fabulous in, and what you'd normally wear to work! Make sure that all clothes are ironed and pressed before the shoot. Feel free to bring a change of clothes if you're comfortable changing on the go.
Corrective lenses: Many of us wear glasses, so wear them if this is your typical look at work! If you normally wear contacts, please remember to wear them! For users of Transitions lenses, please note that your lenses will react to my studio lights, so non-Transitions glasses might be a good idea if you have that option.
Women: Clothes with layering and texture look especially good in photos. Blazers, denim, knits, and soft blouses all look great. Fitted tops or dresses are ideal. Patterns can be fantastic, but only if you're very confident with your style. Necklines that show off your collarbone are typically most flattering. Watch out for cotton or wool pilling on clothing! If we're taking photos outdoors on a cooler day, make sure you have a jacket or sweater to keep you cozy and cute shoes or boots to keep things interesting unless we're only doing head/shoulders!
Makeup: Start natural, just enough to cover up any blemishes. Try not to use matte styles of makeup because it will dry out your skin and bring lip balm or lip gloss with you to help keep lips looking soft. The night before the session, brush your lips with your toothbrush to help get rid of any dead skin. Avoid extreme beauty regimens right before your shoot, like facial peels, tanning or extensive exfoliating and clean up brows and upper lip hair a few days before.
Hair: Something polished, and what you would normally wear in a professional setting is best; you want to be recognizable in your photos! Start with your hair down and towards the end of the shoot put it up in a ponytail if you want to try different looks.
Men: You'll never go wrong with a tidy pair or jeans or pants and a collared shirt. Ties and sweaters can also be fabulous. Please leave the running shoes at home unless we're only doing head/shoulders! Shave right before you leave for a shoot and use cooling gel or aftershave to help with skin irritation.
The boring details:
If we haven't done so before your session, we'll go through all the official bits and bobs when I arrive. I have a standard contract that outlines what I'm providing, copyright fun stuff, when you'll have your finished product, additional products available, etc. If the session fee has not yet been paid in full, we can also sort this out before your session - cash/cheques/credit cards are accepted - before getting to the fun parts. I'd be more than happy to meet you beforehand to sort this all out if you'd prefer to get straight into things during your session!
Set-up for indoor environmental sessions:
When I arrive, I will scope out the more open areas of our location to find the best place to set up for photos if it's at your place of work. If I've provided the location, I'll have scoped it out the day before. I'll be looking for great light and good space to move around in. If you'd like a specific location included in photographs, I will also take a look at those areas to get an idea of how I can take the best photos for the space. Then, I might move some furniture around to get the best spot (don't worry, I'll put everything back before I leave!) and set up my equipment before getting to the fun part. Please tell me if there are any shots in particular that you'd like me to get, so I can make them a priority!
Set-up for indoor studio sessions:
Most indoor studio sessions are set up in a boardroom with the tables and chairs pushed to the side. When I arrive, I'll bring in all my equipment, set up the agreed-upon backdrop and lights, and test all my settings before starting the session.
Outdoor environmental session:
These more relaxed sessions allow for a wonderful variety of locations, and are great for showing off the personality of the model. If this is the session you've selected, we'll put a plan together for how to best capture everyone's personality. I'm able to shoot in most temperatures, but I put my camera away if the rain or wind are too hairy - we'll keep in touch on the day of the session to make sure everything is a go!
For both indoor and outdoor sessions, I have a list of photos that I want to capture, so we'll go through several poses. For outdoor sessions, we'll be walking around a bit to take advantage of a few different backgrounds. I'm always happy to accommodate your ideas - please tell me if there are any shots in particular that you'd like to capture.
After you session, I may take up to 1 week to complete the preview gallery.
Once your photos are completed, I will provide a link to an online gallery where you can view and select your images. Once you select your images, they will be available for download within four business days. If you prefer to have prints completed through me, à la carte items and print packages are available.
That's it! If you have any additional questions before or after your session, please don't hesitate to contact me!
