Family Sessions - What to expect

What to wear:
At the end of the day, wear what you feel the most comfortable and/or fabulous in! "Matching" outfits generally look pretty cheesy in photos (which is great if that's what you want!) and anything with an obvious logo or picture can be distracting, so dressing parents/siblings in simple complementary colours is your best bet.

Women: Clothes with layering and texture look especially good in photos. Sweaters, denim, leggings, ruching, long-sleeve or sleeveless t-shirts all look great. Fitted tops or dresses are also wonderful. Patterns can be fantastic, but only if you're confident with your style. Necklines that show off your collarbone are typically most flattering. Watch out for cotton or wool pilling on clothing! If we're taking photos outdoors on a cooler day, make sure you either have a jacket or sweater to keep you cozy and cute shoes or boots to keep things interesting!

Men: You'll never go wrong with a tidy pair or jeans and a collared shirt. Simple t-shirts and sweaters can also be fabulous. Please leave the running shoes at home and watch out for cotton or wool pilling on clothing! !

How to prepare your home for indoor sessions:
Open all the blinds! Although I only need a small space close to a window, the extra light coming in will definitely help with creating great light.
Make your bed! (If you're comfortable with cozy cuddling-on-the-bed photos.) Family bed shots can be fantastic - if this is something you're interested in, a simple light-coloured bedspread will make for the most striking photos - please tell me if you'd like me to bring one along!

What to expect for outdoor sessions:
These are almost always scheduled for the time just before sunset - the light is magical (and flattering) at this "golden" time of day. Feel free to bring a change of clothes if you're comfortable changing on the go. I'm able to shoot in most temperatures, but I put my camera away if the rain or wind are too hairy - we'll keep in touch on the day of the session to make sure everything is a go!

The boring details:
If we haven't done so before your session, we'll go through all the official bits and bobs when I arrive. I have a standard contract that outlines what I'm providing, copyright fun stuff, when you'll have your finished product, additional products available, etc. If the session fee has not yet been paid in full, we can also sort this out before your session - cash/cheques are accepted - before getting to the fun parts. I'd be more than happy to meet you beforehand to sort this all out if you'd prefer to get straight into things during your session!

Set-up for indoor sessions:
When I arrive, I will scope out the more open areas of your home to find the best place to set up for photos. I'll be looking for great light and good space to move around in. If you'd like a specific area of your home included in photographs, I will also take a look at those areas to get an idea of how I can take the best photos for the space. Then, I might move some furniture around to get the best spot (don't worry, I'll put everything back before I leave!) and set up my equipment before getting to the fun part. Please tell me if there are any shots in particular that you'd like me to get, so I can make them a priority!

Photo time!
For both indoor and outdoor sessions, I have a list of photos that I want to capture - we'll go through several poses and locations. For outdoor sessions, we'll be walking around a bit to take advantage of a few different backgrounds. I'm always happy to accommodate your ideas - please tell me if there are any shots in particular that you'd like to capture!

After you session, I may take up to 1 week to complete the finished images.

Your photos:
Once your photos are completed, I will provide a link to an online gallery where you can view and select your images. Once you select your images, they will be available for download within three business days. If you prefer to have prints or photobooks completed through me, à la carte items and print packages are available.

That's it! If you have any additional questions before or after your session, please don't hesitate to contact me!
